I had set the project priority to 200 to get through some work units to check the fix for the end of run stall yesterday, and it quickly downloaded enough work to immediately use all cores and threads on the system. I was suprised, but assumed it was because I had the project suspended until the end of run hang was fixed, and the "need" built up a bit. This morning though, it was still running 8 threads, not the same work units, that problem I have not seen again, but the interaction with BOINC seems strange. I would not expect it to be running on more than a couple of threads at most. I've set no new tasks to give my other projects a chance at some CPU, I can manually let some in from time to time, but will not restart the project on my other system yet.

Priority issue perhaps?

I had marked the project down to 100, still excessive, now marked down again to 50.

The resource share is nothing more than a ratio of time to run each project that you are accepting work from and that have work. The BOINC CLIENT (!!!) manages this. Projects do not have the ability to control which task runs 1st on your computer, the client does this. The resource share is a long term ratio and will not balance out to any changes for many days. Adding a new project will make the client quickly try to catch up one project to the overall ratio of your allowed projects so a new allowed project will get all your resources.

I'm well aware of that, but when other new projects start, I usually up their quota to get through a few to see how it runs, then drop it back to the usual 100 level to let it continue. This project continued downloading work, so I dropped it to 50, and it is, in fact, still crunching units at the lower quota. It may level off, but the surge at the start was unexpectedly high - I have run a lot of projects so have a little experience with this.

Well nearly 0 days of work at 10-200% is less than work then many days at 100% so the client is trying to catch up.

There is no need to up the 'quota' for a new project. It's not a quota at all. Saying that and upping it for a new project says the resource share function is misunderstood.

So, if I see a new project, and want to run a few work units from it to see how it goes, my upping its quota, is my misunderstanding of the system. Errr, okay, although, to me it demonstrates my absolute understanding of the quota system.

There must be something wrong here. I am still seeing excessive work from here, this is an 8 thread machine, and at the same quota as the other 15 projects, it is running 5 work units.

I am reduced to allow new work for a couple of hours perhaps every two or three days. Doing so this morning, it quickly downloaded and started working on 11 units, all of which ran to completion within two hours. This should not happen at base priority.

No comment or action from the project staff. It is obvious to me there is an issue, but it is calmly ignored. I will be dropping the project at the weekend.
