The report 'Vadim Bulavintsev, Pavel Petrov, Mikhail Posypkin, Oleg Zaikin. A GPU-enabled Black-box Optimization in Application to Dispersion-based Geoacoustic Inversion' was made at the conference OPTIMA'2017. In this report, we discuss a prototype of Acoustics@home's GPU application.

Results of 'Ocean of fantasy' challenge

In the course of 'Ocean of fantasy' challenge, 26.4 % of scenario 906 workunits were calculated. Before the challenge, only 10 % of them were calculated in about two weeks. So, 36.4 % of the search space is recently processed. The project's performance has reached 9 teraflops. We want to thank all volunteers, who took part in the challenge!

В рамках соревнования 'Ocean of fantasy' было обработано 26.4 % воркюнитов сценария 906. Перед соревнованием было обработано только 10 % за 2 недели. Итак, на данный момент пройдено 36.4 % пространства поиска. Производительность проекта достигла 9 терафлопс. Мы благодарим всех кранчеров, которые приняли участие в этом соревновании!

On September 28, 2017, the first challenge in Acoustics@home will be started. During this challenge, we will deal with the quite large scenario no. 906, which contains about 1 million workunits. Recently only 10 % of these workuntis were already calculated.

Application version 0.15 and new experiment

Application version 0.15 was released. We slightly modified the uniform and the weighted main calculation functions. Also, 2 new such functions (uniform2 and weighted2) were added. A new experiment was launched. In this experiment, we need to solve sound speed profile estimation. In particuler, given distance between the source and the reciever of a signal (and also density and sound speed in the bottom), we need to find sound speed values for all 5 water layers.

Выпущена версия клиентского приложения 0.15. Были незначительно модифицированы основные расчетные функции uniform и weighted, а также были добавлены две такие функции - uniform2 и weighted2. Был запущен новый эксперимент, в котором по известным параметрам дна (плотность и скорость звука), а также расстоянию между источником и приемником сигнала, необходимо восстановить значение профиля скосроти звука в воде (т.е. скорости звука для всех 5-ти слоев воды).

A paper, in which it is described how we solve the inversion problems in underwater acoustics, was published. In this paper we consider the calculations performed on a computing cluster. Recently the similar calculations are performed in Acoustics@home.

All results, which were mistakenly marked as invalid, were marked as valid. The corresponding amount of credits were added to hosts, users and teams. I hope it will at least partially fix the problem.

Validation bug was fixed

First experiment

The first experiment was launched. In this experiment, we will solve sound speed profile estimation in underwater acoustics. In particular, the data from Japan sea will be used. Here the sound speed of 1 water layer (close to the surface) is known, and we need to find the values of sound speed for other 4 water layers and also for the distance between the source and the reciever of a signal. Recently only application version for Linux was added. The version for Windows is coming soon.

Запущен первый эксперимент, в котором будет решена задача оценки профиля скорости звука в подводной акустике. Конкретнее, будут обработаны данные из Японского моря. По известной скорости звука в слое воды у поверхности будут восстанавливаются значения скоростей звука остальных четырех слоев воды, а также расстояние от источника сигнала до его приемника. В настоящий момент доступна только версия приложения для linxux. Версия для Windows появится в ближайшее время.
